Hi Dave,
I am the lead programmer for Broken Sword 2.5.
I don't know how much programming experience you have, but programming a game like Broken Sword is very complex. Especially if you are doing the whole game on your own.
If I was you I would go for something easier that still has the point'n'click-adventure feel to it. For example something like this flash-game:

It saves you a lot of trouble if you don't have to animate the player and if there are no other characters to interact with.
Being in an old mansion could be a nice setting that allows for a lot of nice puzzles and discoveries.
