Try it with some tutorials, maybe these ones are helpful: http://www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials. Otherwise use google.com.

the first thing you need is a bit of talent ;)
then you will need software!
- photoshop
- painter
- gimp
...
any graphic software will do the job (except ms paint maybe)

and a mouse/graphicpad

and now you have to paint :D everybody has his own coloringstyle which is also depending on if the resulting image should be cartoonish or realistic.
basic steps i'd say are:
- basic coloring -> just paint the flat colors
- shading/gloss -> here you should keep in mind where the lightsource is located
- texturing -> dirst,bumps,hair,details
- more shading and gloss
- finishing -> tweaking the colortones and contrast (in ps you can do this with setting-layers)

and now do some art.

I'm the one of the "defekter Klinge"......please don't laugh....I'm sorry about posting this new topic....but I must ask you something about broken sword's backgrounds.
Recently I asked to some people how could I daw the Sceneries....it's not difficult if I have got a scanner and if I come from an Artistic Grammar School.... but my problem is the colour....I hope you want to explane me how can i colour my backgrounds....I really need it....Because I trust in a
"Broken Sword Stobbart Strikes Back".....
