Are some of the items "red herrings" or can they all be used? Anybody know?

well, the needle has use ( afaik ).
The little red ball has no practical use either, but you can show it to the student in the bib where you find the ball.

I don't remember using the York FC shirt either.

You can give it to the Bartender in York in exchange with the soap.
