English Voices? Or Just Subtitles :(

Postby clydevalley » 5. April 2007, 18:55

Hi there

I can't wait to play the full game when it comes out, however, playing the demo was okay, but the voices were a bit offputting, as I cannot speak German and find subtitles a pain, and they distract from enjoying the game.

Will the full game be like this, with only english subtitles ?? Will there be no english speaking version ??

Just thought I'd ask, as someone who only speaks english and don't really enjoy games that I have to rely on subtitles.

Thanks :)

Well, the final game will in fact be like this. But I think the team is going to make a version with English voices, too, when the german one is finished.

Please, correct me, if this is not true.

Hi there :)

Thanks for that, I hope you are right, because I think I'd prefer to wait for the English speaking version to come out. Any other lanuage is very distracting and having to rely on subtitles is even worse, you miss out on the whole feel of the game, because you are concentrating on reading what is being said and not enjoying what's going on.

My scottish friend Meg:

These words you've written concerning the english subtitles and german voices sounds weird for me. Think that almost 90% of the games made world wide are at least made in your language (both voices and subtitles). And if not, they are translated.

Now imagine other nationalities, small Europe countries for example, where selling adventures is less profitable. To play in a different language and subtitles is a must... I can't complain. In my country we've got almost everything translated into spanish, but imagine people with less luck and having all in a foreign language and with no chance to choose. Perhaps the text is the only way they can understand the adventures and having it checked is a regular habit. I won't have the voices in spanish and we shall work to translate the texts.

Don't you feel lucky to play this BS2.5 with at least subtitles in english now? [smilie=angle.gif].

Hi there

Some British games etc have no voices at all, some have only subtitles and some have only music and subtitles.

I suppose for me, it's less to do another lanuage, and more to do with subtitled games in general, be for whatever reason they have subtitles, it's just a personal preference for me to avoid them. I am afraid I dislike subtitles, be it on games or television, but understand how important they are as I have many deaf friends.

I cannot enjoy anything with subtitles, as I'm so busy reading them, the whole feel of any atmosphere, goes completely down the tubes for me.

I think it's amazing what the game makers are doing, because the old BS gameplay was by far the best. My opinions are by no means any reflection on them or the game......................but all to do with me and my dislike for subtitles.

Each have our own preferences. I'll be happy and patient to wait :)

Thanks

yeh i agree that the German voice is distracting for an English player and I don;t mind subtitles too much but think it would be great if there was an english voice actor

Firstly: the demo is really great.. but also I have some problems with the german voice and english subs, I can understand german and I read the subs and the distracting thing for me was that the voice says something else than what is subtitled, and that confuses me..
I do hope there will be english voices, even if they are with a german accent ;)

But no matter what, I hope they finish the game with or without english voices (but be sure to make the subs optional so you can at least disable them)..

I think there will be subtitles at first.
Then after the release, they will see if it is necessary /possible to add english voices. I´m not sure but I believe they said something like that in an other thread...

IMO they should have made it with English voice actors and not German VA at all !! Cause at the end of the day, most the world speaks English at least as a secondary language !! Who the heck speaks German (apart from Germans..lol) !!

German language spoken in: Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg (except in administration), Switzerland (aprox. 65%). Poland and Czech Republic a little because of people descendant of germans or people that has worked in german mother tongue countries. 120 million aprox. in Europe. Quite big community but really that's all.

You can always find in other countries people who can speak in it because of many things, but cannot be considered as german speaking countries. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Mexico [smilie=blink2.gif]. Yes there are among a couple to a dozen of Steinmanns there but at least I know one that has no idea of German. Or you can speak spanish... or you´ll get lost for sure [smilie=book.gif].

P.D.: You can add Spain to the list too. Some parts of Majorca would pass as a Deutschland/Österreich Länder [smilie=icon_cheesygrin.gif].

Ok, Dave, if your such a big fan of the English language, where can I get YOUR game with English voice actors? No wait, if you're a native English speaker I want a version with German voice actors first - and no subtitles, please, cause I'm too lazy to read them. And I hope you didn't forget about a Mandarin version for the 1051 million people speaking this language ...
